Volunteer Frequent Questions

Q: Who can volunteer?

A: We welcome a wide range of volunteers.  We welcome volunteers with our Junior Volunteer program at age 8, with parent consent.  Every age is a great age to be a part of the Burpee Team.  You do not need to know HOW to do what you are interested in…we are excited to teach you all about natural science!

Q: What options are available?

A: From special event set-up to docents and helpers at the museum, Burpee looks for great helpers.  We encourage you to look at multiple aspects of programming, from education to exhibit design to science lab work.  Fill out an application; our volunteer coordinator will help you find a great fit!

Q: Can my hours count as community service?

A: Absolutely! We welcome school, club, national honor society, or other required community service hours at Burpee.  Don’t forget to plan ahead, and try not to squeeze all your hours in the end.  Our volunteer coordinator can help you! Let us know your requirements, and we can set up a schedule.

Q: My child is interested in volunteering…what can my 8-year-old youth do?

A: There are loads of fun activities for the youngest volunteers.  Many enjoy docent activities such as teaching the public about animals, taking our huge tortoise outside for a walk, or prepping crafts for a special education activity.  All junior volunteers are supervised while in the museum but should be able to work independently without guidance for a short period of time.

Q: Can groups volunteer together?

A: YES! We often work with community groups, bridge programming, and employers to do group volunteer days.  If you are interested, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us by phone or email (aster.walbaum@burpee.org)

Q: I have unique artifacts, knowledge, or a collection…Can I volunteer to share?

A: YES! Often unique collectors come with their specimens to a special event and set up a booth to share skills or artifacts.  Others teach unique classes or participate in education.  Be sure to share your special interest, talent, or collection with our volunteer coordinator on your application!

Q: How do we get started?

A: The first step is to fill out the volunteer application online or in the museum.  Shortly thereafter, the volunteer coordinator will get in touch with you to set up an in-museum orientation.  Once you have finished the initial training, you can go to the volunteer opportunities page and sign up through the Google calendar.  Open slots fill on a first come, first served basis.  If you have to cancel, we ask that you remove your name from the calendar at least 48 hours in advance.  If you have to cancel with less notice, please call the museum.
