Behavior Policy
At Burpee Museum, we strive to create an engaging, respectful, and safe learning environment for all homeschool students, educators, and families. Our hands-on, inquiry-based approach to science is designed to inspire curiosity and discovery. To ensure a positive experience for all participants, we have established the following behavioral expectations for students, parents, and educators.
What We Expect from Our Homeschool Participants
We Are Kind
- We treat our fellow students, educators, and museum staff with kindness and respect.
- We listen when others are speaking and participate in discussions in a respectful manner.
- We help create a welcoming environment where everyone feels encouraged to learn and explore.
We Are Respectful
- We respect museum property, exhibits, and learning materials. Many exhibits are hands-on, but they must be handled with care.
- We use indoor voices in classrooms and exhibit spaces to ensure a calm learning environment.
- We respect the personal space and learning time of others.
- We clean up after ourselves in classrooms, workshops, and shared spaces.
We Are Safe
- We walk in all museum spaces—no running, climbing, or roughhousing.
- We stay with our group and follow instructor directions.
- We handle all museum objects and materials appropriately.
- We are mindful of younger learners and students of all abilities, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for everyone.
Unacceptable Behaviors
While we encourage positive behavior, there are certain actions that cannot be tolerated, as they disrupt the experience for others or compromise safety.
The following behaviors will not be accepted:
- Disrespectful or disruptive behavior toward museum staff, instructors, or fellow students.
- Damaging or misusing museum exhibits, property, or learning materials.
- Behavior that prevents other students from learning or interferes with the instructor’s ability to teach.
- Unsafe actions, including running, pushing, throwing objects, or not following safety instructions.
- Failure to follow classroom and museum rules after reasonable warnings.
Burpee Museum staff will provide appropriate warnings and communicate concerns with students and parents. However, if a student repeatedly violates behavioral expectations, Burpee reserves the right to revoke their registration privileges for future homeschool classes and programs.
Our goal is to create an inclusive and enriching learning environment where every student has the opportunity to engage with science, history, and discovery. We appreciate your partnership in fostering a respectful, safe, and enjoyable experience at Burpee Museum!
Full Winter/Spring Season
Our Full Season “Introduction to Branches of Science”
Save with your purchase of the full season of classes at once!
Have you ever found yourself wondering about the different branches of science and what they actually do? This year, we are going to take a deep-dive into common branches of life and physical sciences. Spend the first five weeks learning about different physical sciences: what chemistry tells us about the atmosphere around us, how meteorology can explain weather patterns, and why physics can explain the world! Then we will spend the last two weeks learning about different life sciences: how agriculture and food science is used in real life, and why botanists choose to study plants! Each class will include engaging hands-on labs, lessons and activities that align with the NGS Standards.
Week 1: Meteorology
Everything is connected. Learn how meteorology explains some of the biggest atmospheric questions about life: climate impacts, weather patterns, severe storms, and more!
Class Time: 2:00 PM-4:00 PM
Preregistration Required.
Week 2: Oceanography
Where does our water come from, where does it go? Dive into the water cycle! Discover how the oceans circulate, how the greatest waves are produced, and why water is such a great natural resource!
Class Time: 2:00 PM-4:00 PM
Preregistration Required.
Week 3: Chemistry
Ignite your passion for discovery and master chemistry. Discover the fundamentals of the universe through chemicals, the central science that explains everything from the air you breathe to the energy in your food
Class Time: 2:00 PM-4:00 PM
Preregistration Required.
Week 4: Physics
Discover the fundamental laws that govern motion, energy, and the cosmos. Use observations and measurements to help explain the basic laws that govern the universe.
Class Time: 2:00 PM-4:00 PM
Preregistration Required.
Week 5: Zoology
Explore zoology to understand the evolutionary history that links all living creatures! Discover how to protect endangered species, the abundance of diversity on life on Earth, and how to preserve biodiversity for future generations.
Class Time: 2:00 PM-4:00 PM
Preregistration Required.
Week 6: Agriculture/Food Science
From the farm field outside, to the produce in your grocery store – where does this come from? Learn about the world of agriculture and food science and how it provides the food and raw materials that humans need to survive.
Class Time: 2:00 PM-4:00 PM
Preregistration Required.
Week 7: Botany
Explore the hidden green world through botany, the study of plants. Discover the essential foundation for all life on Earth, from the food we eat to the air we breathe. Understand the complex biology, genetics, and ecology of the organisms that fuel the world.
