Dinomite Tour
Dinomite Field Trip
Journey through time, meet prehistoric giants, and learn the difference between a bone and a fossil! Explore Earth’s history. This trip is designed for students ages eight and younger.
We will wonder together: what is a fossil? How is it formed? Burpee educators will guide students through inquiry and discovery as we share real fossils to touch, dig deeper into exhibits, and come face to face with full dinosaurs. Walk through a life-size coal forest simulation and touch tiny prehistoric snails on your journey through time! Touch real fossils and interact with Burpee educators to explore the age of dinosaurs and more. Join us for a day outside the classroom as you tour our museum to support, reinforce, or expand classroom learning!
Key Concepts:
- Fossil formation, dinosaurs, prehistoric plants & animals, animal needs, habitats, natural resources
Skills:
- Asking questions, making observations, analyzing and interpreting data
Accessibility:
The program includes moving short distances in groups and sitting on the floor for discussion & activities. Chairs and/or tables are available upon request. Students may experience an animal encounter with a turtle or tortoise. We believe there should be no boundaries for your students’ Burpee Museum experience. If you have an accommodation request related to a disability, please get in touch with us at 815-965-3433. We look forward to assisting you.

- DCI K-LS1 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
- All animals need food in order to live and grow. They obtain their food from plants or from other animals. Plants need water and light to live and grow.
- Science & Engineering Practices: Analyzing and Interpreting Data-Use observations (firsthand or from media) to describe patterns in the natural world in order to answer scientific questions.
- Cross Cutting Concepts:
- Scientists look for patterns and order when making observations about the world.
- Patterns in the natural and human-designed world can be observed and used as evidence.
1st Grade
- DCI 1-LS1 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
- LS1.A: All organisms have external parts. Different animals use their body parts in different ways to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find, and take in food, water, and air. Plants also have different parts (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits) that help them survive and grow.
- LS1.B: Growth and Development of Organisms Adult plants and animals can have young. In many kinds of animals, parents and the offspring themselves engage in behaviors that help the offspring to survive.
- LS1.D: Information Processing Animals have body parts that capture and convey different kinds of information needed for growth and survival. Animals respond to these inputs with behaviors that help them survive. Plants also respond to some external inputs.
- Science & Engineering Practices:
- Analyzing and Interpreting Data- Use media to obtain scientific information to determine patterns in the natural world.
- Cross-Cutting Concepts:
- Patterns- Patterns in the natural and human-designed world can be observed, used to describe phenomena, and used as evidence.
- Structure and Function- The shape and stability of structures of natural and designed objects are related to their function(s)
2nd Grade
- DCI 1-LS3 Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits
- LS3.B: Variation of Traits Individuals of the same kind of plant or animal are recognizable as similar but can also vary in many ways.
- 2-LS4 Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity
- LS4.D: Biodiversity and Humans There are many different kinds of living things in any area, and they exist in different places on land and in water.
- Science & Engineering Practices:
- Planning and Carrying Out Investigations- Make observations (firsthand or from media) to collect data that can be used to make comparisons.
- Cross Cutting Concepts
- Patterns- Scientific Knowledge is Based on Empirical Evidence Scientists look for patterns and order when making observations about the world.
- Structure and Function-The shape and stability of structures of natural and designed objects are related to their function(s).
