Habitats of Illinois

From wetlands to the woods, explore the habitats of Illinois! Enjoy a prairie tour, learn about taxidermy methods, explore the living animals of a wetland, and dig into the amazing creatures that call Illinois home. Don’t miss the live turtles!

Key Concepts:

Habitats: Explore local habitats, the animals within those habitats, and the traits adapted for success in different seasons.

Energy Transfer: Learn how the sun drives energy flows within a habitat’s ecosystem, explore trophic levels, and better understand the interconnected nature of each local habitat.

Adaptations: Each habitat requires animals to be suited for that location.  Explore the adaptations that make an animal successful in a prairie, but maybe not in a wetland or forest.

Conservation: With fragmented habitats and shrinking resources, students will explore how human impact on populations can inhibit their success and what we can do to improve their success!

Skills:

Asking questions, making observations, analyzing and interpreting

Accessibility:

The program includes moving short distances in groups and sitting on the floor for discussion & activities. Chairs and/or tables are available upon request. Students may experience an animal encounter with a turtle or tortoise. We believe there should be no boundaries for your students’ Burpee Museum experience. If you have an accommodation request related to a disability, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at 815-965-3433. We look forward to assisting you.
