Journey to the Jurassic:

Tour a Dinosaur Graveyard

Join Burpee Museum’s field team for an unforgettable tour of our dinosaur bonebed.  Located on Bureau of Land Management Land (BLM), in the town of Hanksville, UT, this bonebed is one of the largest in the United States.  The site is open for free tours during May and June 2025.  Please see below for details.

6Meet the Dinosaurs

Buried in the stone of the Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry you can see field crews excavating bone after bone from the Morrison Formation.

Field Season Runs May 11-June 19, 2026

The Burpee Museum crew opens the site and works on the dinosaur excavation for several weeks each summer. During this time, the crew educators provide free tours for the public.  These tours are offered at 11am, 1pm and 3pm on Monday-Friday, and 11am, 1pm on Saturday.

The large University Rover Challenge takes over the area from May 26-30 so the quarry is closed to public tours during this time.

What is the crew working on?

The deposit preserves the remains of a minimum of 15 different dinosaurs, including a high diversity of taxa. Most prevalent among the fossils are those of the longneck sauropod dinosaurs, primarily Diplodocus. Three other species of sauropod are known from the quarry and include Apatosaurus, Barosarus, and Camarasaurus. The theropod dinosaur, Allosaurus, has been found, as well as the small ornithopod Dryosaurus and the armored dinosaur, Mymoorapelta. Some material may be referable to Stegosaurus; however, further examination is needed to be certain.

Located at the end of N. Cow Dung Road, off of rt. 24 in Hanksville, Utah.
